Foodies are racing to enjoy one of Australia’s most unique dining experiences at a pop-up restaurant hidden inside a 120-year-old tree before it closes next month.
A visit to the Enchanted Fig Tree, on Kangaroo Island, SA, is said to be like stepping into the pages of a children’s storybook.
Visitors can enjoy a handcrafted menu of Australian dishes nestled between the gnarled limbs and shimmering leaves of the majestic tree, where kitsch cups and Enid Blyton books are scattered beneath a canopy of twigs and twinkling fairy lights.
Cocktails and canapes are served at the mouth of the Alice In Wonderland-esque eatery, which can be reached by taking a 40-minute flight from Adelaide to Kingscote and driving just under an hour to Snelling’s Beach.

Reviews posted on social media describe the restaurant as ‘simply spectacular’ and ‘the most magical’ experience.
One woman said: ‘Words can’t describe eating in a beautiful fig tree, pictures just don’t do this place justice.’

Gastronomo tapped some of South Australia’s best chefs to oversee a guest-chef campaign that launched in December and runs until April 9, with menus designed by the likes of Simon Bryant from ABC’s The Cook and the Chef.
While the restaurant’s summer season of evening dinners has come to an end, guests can still book in for an extravagant lunch from 12.30pm Wednesday to Sunday for $135 per person.
